10 Questions brings you another of the hottest up and coming indie stars today – Matt Sigmon. Sigmon has wrestled in rings around the world and has learned from some of the biggest Legends in the business. He’s currently at the end of his biggest year yet with 2015 shaping up to be even bigger. Check out a few of Sigmon’s matches after our chat and be sure to follow him on social media.
1. Where are you from and when did you start wrestling?
I live in Knoxville, TN, but was raised in a small town in Kentucky called Middlesboro. I started wrestling or at least training for it in 2004. Had my first match, if you could call it that, [laughs] in January of 2005.
2. Who trained you?
When I was wanting to break in I went up to Chaotic Wrestling’s school, ran by Killer Kowalski, to train for a week and see how I liked it. They kicked my ass and I decided I wanted more. Dr. Tom Prichard opened a school in 2005, so I joined it and trained for several months. That was a great learning experience, but I also credit most of my true in ring work to Ricky Morton and Bobby Eaton. They took me on the road on and off for a few years and passed on loads of knowledge. I believe you never stop learning and anytime I have a chance to gain knowledge, I take it!
3. What titles have you held?
NWA Smoky Mountain Tag (with David Young and currently with Elliott Russell), Mountain Empire & TV Titles, NWA Mid Atlantic Junior Heavyweight Title, IWWA (based in West Virginia) Tag Titles with David Young.
4. Have you had any kind of contact with WWE in your career?
I’ve done a few extra spots. Nothing in recent years, but would like to go back sometime soon.
5. Who has been your toughest opponent on the indies?
My toughest (and one of my favorites) opponent has been Vordell Walker. The program we ran at TCW challenged us to pick it up and go hard. Jason Kincaid would come in at a close second as we always try to top what we have done in the past.
6. What promotions have you worked for and have you worked in Mexico or Japan?
Lots of NWA (Smoky Mountain, Mid-South, Elite, Mid Atlantic, among others), Canadian Wrestling Elite, Traditional Championship Wrestling, Crossfire Wrestling, Beyond Wrestling, Ring of Honor, World League Wrestling, Inoki USA and an endless number of smaller indies.
7. What is your finisher?
Flying Headbutt, when it’s worth it as it really takes a toll on my body. Or a running lariat, called the Loser Lariat when doing the Winner/Loser gimmick.
8. Have you worked against any Legends or former WWE guys on the indies?
Probably too many to name [laughs]. I have been blessed with being able to work across the continent against some of the best the business has had to offer.
9. What are your goals on the indies, where do you want to be in 5 years?
I want 2015 to be my best year yet and it’s shaping up to be. I’d really like to do more international travel. Japan, NJPW preferably, and England are big on my list. If I can get to a point where I am paying all of my bills, have some to save and having a good time doing it, I will be a happy man.
10. Tell the average WWE or TNA fan why they should follow you and watch your career.
I go night after night doing what I can to make sure that everyone that comes to the show has a good time and feels like it was money well spent.
