EXCLUSIVE: ROH Tag Wars 2010 – Charlotte NC – Images + Recap
Last night I attended Ring of Honor’s Tag Wars 2010 live from Metrolina Trade Expo in Charlotte North Carolina. This marked the companies return to the area, and they promised not to let us down. I was sitting front row (again), and was right on top of the action.
I arrived to the venue early, and walked around and spoke to a few of the workers and fans that I recognized from the Big Bang iPPV. Doors opened at 6:30 with a 7:30 bell time.
The show started with Cary Silkin and the ROH Crew coming to the ring and welcoming us to the show. They asked that we not take pictures or videos during the show. (well I did anyway)
Match #1:
El Generico beat Erick Stevens (with Prince Nana) in 8:22. The Embassy received a nice pop from the crowd here in Charlotte, but they were obviously well behind Generico. The entire place was rocking with “Ole” chants throughout the match. Fast paced match, lots of great spots, including a dive to the floor. Generico wins with a brainbuster.
Match #2
Steve Corino beat Bobby Dempsey around the 10 minute mark. The match seemed to be built around the strength of Corino’s comedy. He was hilarious. The crowd never gave Dempsey a chance. Chanting “He’s a Jobber” and yelling other brutal comments at Dempsey the entire match. When Dempsey accidentally knocked out ref Paul Turner, Corino went for the chain. Dempsey blocked it, but Corino kicked him low and pinned him with a lariat. Fun match. Corino is awesome. Monster Heel.
Match #3
Necro Butcher (with Prince Nana) beat Grizzly Redwood in 7:24. The fans were way behind Necro during the match. Lots of “Necro’s gonna kill you” chants as well as the “Fuck him up Necro, Fuck him up” chants. When Redwood delivered on a slingshot sunset powerbomb to the floor the crowd exploded, and was really the only time they were behind Grizzly. Necro won with a tiger driver.
Match #4
ROH TV Champion Eddie Edwards pinned Colt Cabana in at 11:43. This was a Non Title Match, and the crowd was split on who they were behind. Very entertaining match from beginning to end. Cabana did his comedy bit, hamming it up for the fans. Finish saw Cabana go for the Butt Butt, Edwards countered with a picture perfect O’Connor Roll. After the match, they shook hands. Edwards pointed at the ROH Logo on the mat and said “here” and which drew a nice “ROH” chant.
Match #5
Bravado Brothers & Cedric Alexander beat Caleb Konley & Man Scout & Marker Dillinger. Crowd was quiet coming off the intermission but really picked up toward the finish. The fans didn’t care to much for the local talent that was working the match, but did pop well for the Bravados. I will say that The Bravado’s in ring work has improved GREATLY since they were here last at the Big Bang. One of the Bravado Brothers, I don’t know which is which pinned Konley after a combo German suplex move.
Match #6
(1) Roderick Strong beat (3) Kevin Steen (with Steve Corino) in a Pick Six Challenge match that lasted about 15 minutes. It was great. When Steen entered the ring the fans started a “NEXT WORLDS CHAMP” chant, that had Corino and Steen hamming it up in ring. The crowd was way into this match. Steen was jawing and screaming at the fans, and at one point stole a sign from a fan that said “Fight Me Kevin Steen”, and he used it on Roddy and ripped it up and crammed it into Strongs face. Lots of good series in this match. Lots of submission holds and counters. The fans were loving every bit of it. Corino distracted the ref allowing Steen to go for the chain. Cabana stopped Steen from using it, and brawled with Corino. Steen kicked Strong low and was again about to use the chain, when Generico blew past him with a hilo dive onto Corino. The crowd was going nuts doing this. Strong hit the double knee gutbuster on a dazed Steen and pinned him after a superkick. Steen and Corino stayed around after the match and yelled and picked fights with the fans. Amazing match.
Match #7
Finals of Tag Wars 2010, Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli with Shane Hagadorn) defeated Briscoe Brothers and All Night Express (Rhett Titus & Kenny King) and Dark City Fight Club (Kory Chavis & Jon Davis) to retain the titles at the 28:28 mark. Crowd was big on the Briscoes. Chanting “Man Up”. First fall was four corners survival. Dark City Fight Club worked a lot at the bigging of the match, with Titus and King. Hilarious spot of the match was when the Kings tagged in both Briscoes to force them a face off. However The Kings strategy backfired when both of them were tagged in and the others teams ran away as they tried to return the favor and tag in both members of the other teams. It ended with Titus pinning Davis after an All-Night Express double team move to eliminate DCFC at 18:31. The Second fall was Texas Tornado rules. Jay bled like crazy during this match. At one point when he was thrown into the guard rail blood splattered me, getting on my arms and shirt. The action was everywhere during this and incredibly hard to follow it all. Everyone took turns beating on Mark, while Jay was being double teamed on the floor. The Kings were killing Mark with double team moves but he kicked out of everything they could throw at him. Crowd was amazing during the match. Chanting and Popping the entire time. Jay pinned Titus after the Doomsday Device. Winning the second fall. But Hero immediately clocked Jay with the roaring elbow to win the match. Fans chanted “that was awesome” and “thank you Briscoes”.
Match #8
Cornette did mic work getting more heat on Black for refusing to do a title match. Crowd was all over Tyler. He said the match was signed as non-title before Black’s extracurricular activities came to light and called Richards/Black from Toronto the best match he had seen since Flair/Steamboat in 87. Black said he was feeling frisky, but it was a swerve. Black said he was leaving this shithole and taking the belt with him.
Davey Richards beat ROH Champion Tyler Black via submission in a non-title match in 26:39. Awesome match. The crowd was behind Davey, and were brutal towards Black. All kinds of anti-WWE crap directed at Black. One sign read “Tyler the NXT jobber”. Richards was taking it to Black had the champion begging off. Black scraped his side and was bleeding a bit. Once that got cranking, both were going a mile a minute. Richards seems to only have the one gear. At one point, they got into a furious exchange of strikes, Black hit a reverse huracanrana and Richards came right back with a brainbuster, and the place exploded. Richards repeatedly popped up on Black’s big moves. Richards was using leg submissions but Black showed no effect from them. Black kicked out of the DR Driver and his own finisher before tapping out to the Cloverleaf. I have never heard a crowd hate on somebody for so long and so brutally. Richards stuck around after the match and thanked everyone for their support. He plugged ROH as being the best in the world, and that it was his home. Fans errupted after the match. Tons of memorable chants during the match “Fuck you Tyler”, “Future Jobber”, as well as “N X T! N X T!” Black was great working the heel angle. He was taking it and giving it back to the fans just as hard.
At one point during the match, Richards was laying on his back and Tyler stood over him, Tyler leaned over Richards and did the John Cena “you cant see me” hand motion. Richards, kicked up quickly and laid some stiff shots on black to follow.
AMAZING SHOW well worth the money. I have uploaded images from the show, and you can view the entire gallery here
