Saturday night from the NC Music Factory in Charlotte, N.C., Fight Lab Promotions presented Fight Lab 16. The event featured four amateur title contests, along with a pair of professional bouts. In the main event of the evening, rising featherweights John Owens and Keith Richardson faced in what could be a career defining fight for the winner. The judges at cageside were given the night off as all nine contests finished inside the distance, to the obvious satisfaction of the capacity crowd.

William Brown vs. Brock Ison – 185 lbs.

Round 1 – Brown comes out in a kung fu stance, misses the first shot and catches a good counter right that staggers him. Ison looks for a choke and hangs on through the first attempt to shake free. But a good switch puts Ison on his back. Brown takes the top and slides Ison across the ring to the side of the cage. Neither fighter does much advance from there, until Brown gets to full mount. Ison turns his hips and ends up taking Brown’s back. Brown avoids too much damage and finally manages to get back to full guard just before the round ends. Round goes to Brown.

Round 2 – Brown opens up with a spinning back fist that partially lands. The two trade hands briefly before tying up along the cage. A good leg sweep takes the fight to the ground. A kimura attempt from the bottom by Ison almost stops the fight, but Brown steps over and avoids it. Ison manages to use the position to get back on top and begins to work for the back. Ison gets the back with one hook in. Ison looking for the choke and gets it. Great submission win for Brock Ison.

Decision Brock Ison wins by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:03 of Round 2.

Toni Vermiglio vs Daniella Urban – 120 lbs.

Round 1 – Vermiglio opens with a leg kick, and the two begin to brawl quickly. Vermiglio gets the fight to the ground with a trip along the cage and works the body from the guard. Urban ties things up as the referee takes a close look at standing the two up. Urban starts working the guard higher and higher, but is never able to isolate an arm for a triangle choke. The round ends there. Toni Vermiglio takes the first round.

Round 2 – Urban opens up with a pair of leg kicks, and presses Vermiglio into the cage. Vermiglio pushes forward and gets the takedown. Vermiglio in full mount starts to pound away with punches. Urban covers up and the referee eventually steps in and stops it.

Decision – Toni Vermiglio wins by TKO (strikes) at 1:38 of Round 2.

Tony Scarlett vs. Joe Pacheco – 205 lbs.

Round 1 – Pacheco opens up with a rattling right to the Scarlett’s chin. Pacheco clinches and pushes the fight against the cage.  Pacheco gets the fight down along the cage, postures up, and looks to rain down punches. As he stands he lands several hard shots. The referee stops the fight after Scarlett apparently verbally submits.

Decision – Joe Pacheco wins by verbal submission (injury) in Round 1.

Kevin Hulin vs. Forrest Brown – 125 lbs.
Amateur Flyweight Championship

Round 1 – Hulin opens up with a leg kick, and explodes with a huge slam. Brown grabs a guillotine, but it’s loose. Hulin gets his head free and begins working from half guard. Brown attempts to wall walk. Hulin grabs a guillotine and rolls over. Brown tries to stand out of it, but it is too tight and he is forced tap out.

Decision – Kevin Hulin wins by submission (guillotine choke) at 2:09 of Round 1.

Ryan Freeman vs. Chris Davis – 205 lbs.
Amateur Light Heavyweight Championship

Round 1 – Freeman opens up with a series of snapping jabs. Davis answers back with a couple of haymakers. Davis rushes in and looks to tie the fight up. Along the cage both men work the body. Freeman lands a big shot that rocks Davis badly. Davis retreats to the cage. Freeman lands another big blast that explodes Davis’ nose. Blood is streaming from Davis’s face as he dives for a leg. The referee calls a halt to the bout to have the doctor check the injury. The doctor waives off the fight due the broken nose.

Decision – Ryan Freeman wins by TKO (doctor stoppage) at 2:14 of Round 1.

Kevin Forant vs. Jason Lineberger – 155 lbs.
Amateur Lightweight Championship

Round 1 – Forant immediately pushes the fight into the cage. Both men trade punches off the break. Lineberger gets a quick takedown. As Forant stands Lineberger lands a good combination. Forant, against the cage, lands a few knees to the body. Lineberger gets another big takedown and lands several power shots as he stands over Forant. Forant continually throws his legs up to try and tie up, but Lineberger keeps finding the holes. Forant finally sweeps and now stands over Lineberger. He lands a good leg kick and moves into the guard. The round ends with Lineberger taking the edge.

Round 2 – Forant, sporting a bloody nose and cut on his forehead, opens the round with a jab and a takedown. Forant gets to mount and punches away. Lineberger tries to roll away but cannot. The referee steps in and calls a stop to the fight. After the bell it looks as though Lineberger may have injured his knee. Nevertheless, a great win for Forant, who is now the Fight Lab Lightweight Champion.

Decision – Kevin Forant wins by TKO at 0:56 of Round 2.

Mike Powell vs. Christian Brunetti – 145 lbs.
Amateur Featherweight Championship

Round 1 – Powell comes out quick with a solid combination. Brunetti pulls guard for a guillotine. Brunetti stands and sinks it in tight. Powell gets free and lands another good combination. Powell lands a series of knees and hooks to the body. Powell drops to his knees and takes Brunetti over with a fireman’s carry. Brunetti scrambles to top position and looks for a leg lock. Powell reaches for one as well. Brunetti steps back and lets Powell back on his feet. The two tie back up along the cage. Powell lands another brutal knee to the body. Brunetti looks for a standing guillotine.  Powell signals that he’s in no trouble, and stays there until the round ends. Close round, but likely will be awarded to Brunetti.

Round 2 – Powell with a straight left off the bell, and they tie up briefly. Powell lands a good right, forcing Brunetti to retreat to the ground. Powell quickly follows him down and locks up a triangle choke. Brunetti has no where to go and gives in to the submission. Mike Powell retains his featherweight title.

Decision – Mike Powel wins via submission (triangle choke) at 1:04 of Round 2.

John Constantatos vs. Ricky Rainey – 185 lbs.

Round 1 – Constantatos comes out the aggressor, pressing the action, but cannot catch up to Rainey. He finally pushes the fight into the cage and looks for the takedown. Constantatos gets the short slam. Rainey switches his hips and pops up. Constantatos lands a good knee from the clinch, and looks for another takedown. Rainey lands a series of elbows that breaks up the attempt. As they separate Rainey rocks Constantatos, and just misses a head kick. Constantatos continues to press forward until Rainey lands a huge left that drops Constantatos. Constantatos lays flat on the canvas as Rainey celebrates the knockout.

Decision – Ricky Rainey wins by KO (punch) at 3:46 of Round 1.

John Owens vs. Keith Richardson – 145 lbs.

Round 1 – Richardson rushes in quick, attacking with kicks. Richardson digs in, scooping and slamming Owens. Owens ties up for a moment, but Richardson gets to half guard. Owens regains full guard. Owens almost escapes, but Richardson stays on him, landing an elbow in the process. He opens a small cut on Owens’ eye. Richardson working hard to get free enough to punch. Owens gets back to his feet, but only for a second as Richardson spins him back down. He lands a short elbow and looks to create space by standing. Owens does a good job of avoiding much damage, but loses the round convincingly.

Round 2 – Richardson opens the round by immediately taking it to the ground. He gets side control and isolates an arm. Richardson cranks the arm backwards until Owens is forced to submit.

Decision – Keith Richardson wins by submission (Americana) at 0:29 of Round 2
